Experiencing China

I had always wanted to study abroad in order to learn about a different culture and directly experience it for myself. China is a place I never had an inclination to visit, but I really enjoyed my time there and learning about the culture. It made me want to see and experience so much more of the world! Now, no place is off limits and I just want to see more.

Before embarking on this journey, the biggest concern I had was that of not knowing the language. It was difficult to adjust to at first, but you learn to get by. The good thing was that some things were written in English and there were people who spoke it also. In most cases we would use signals and gestures to communicate. Something else that really helped was being able to have the guides who were with us when we went out. I also tried learning simple phrases from the guides and teachers. What I learned from them really helped me on my journey.

This experience is very meaningful to me and something that I will always remember.

The most memorable experience I have from my trip was the time I was out exploring China. The day I was out exploring with a group of students, I was able to experience having traditional Chinese tea with some of the locals. This experience is very meaningful to me and something that I will always remember. Throughout my study abroad program, I tried to fill every free minute I had with various activities. I went to several museums, gardens, temples and street markets.

Some of my favorite memories were made at the different Chinese temples and gardens I was able to visit. All of the sites I had the privilege to see during this program were simply breathtaking. All of the mealtime and dinners I had during the program were also great cultural experiences. The food was definitely unlike anything I was used to, and dinner customs, such as sharing all food items on a rotating table, were very novel and exciting.

Although it was also challenging to get out of my comfort zone and go halfway across the world without knowing anyone else, I'm so glad I did it and made great friends along the way.

My advice to anyone who is considering studying abroad is to just go! Take advantage of the opportunities that GSU provides. It was great to go with a group of students who have the same adventurous spirit as me. You will not regret it!
