Between The World And Me: The African American Global Experience

“You are growing into consciousness, and my wish for you is that you feel no need to constrict yourself to make other people comfortable.” Ta-Nehisi Coates, Between the World and Me

In the fall of 2017, Governors State University hosted a panel discussion featuring African-American study abroad alumni students. These seven brave students discussed their experiences of studying abroad while Black and the unique perspective that their culture brings to their travels. Moderator, Dr. Phyllis West Ph.D., MPH, University Senior Lecturer, initiates topics of; perceptions within the African-American community about international travel, perceptions of African-American people while overseas, and life changes after coming home. The panel was funny, insightful, inspiring, and is a must watch for anyone looking to broaden their perspective on study abroad.
