Water is a Luxury

My name is Jessica Roberson and in the spring of 2016 I chose to study abroad in Nicaragua in order to help others. In the end, I received more than I was able to give.

"We were able to communicate through warm smiles and gestures."

The most interesting cultural experience that I had while abroad was that of the language barrier. Although I did not speak Spanish, we were able to communicate through warm smiles and gestures. The biggest challenge was arriving late after a long flight and realizing there was no water available to shower. Initially, I became agitated but soon realized that showering whenever I wanted, with hot water, was not a necessity but instead a luxury not afforded to all. This made me appreciate what I have back home even more and I am now even more grateful for it all.

The most meaningful aspect of my time abroad was working alongside

the families to improve their living conditions. They welcomed us and worked hard with us.

Personal impact: It was a humbling experience. I realize how much we take for granted in our culture.

My biggest advice for anyone who is considering studying abroad is to just do it! The experience will change your life and broaden your outlook on life.
